Waves in Addiction

If you're struggling with any addiction, remember that the pain of withdrawal comes IN WAVES. Don't think of it as an endless and impossibly painful curse that will test you day after day. All you need do is learn how to ride the waves, let them wash over you, distract yourself while they are present, or use any ritual or coping strategy of your own design.

The waves sometimes feel too much and the knowledge that you can get rid of the pain with a drag on this, a sip of that, a taste of this, (and it's the same with almost any addictions from nicoteen to internet porn to video gaming to old fashioned booze) is often too much.

So. Know that the bad feeling will pass sooner than you think. Often in just a few minutes, even though they may feel like the longest few minutes of your life. You can hang on that long.

  1. the tibetan book of the living and dying can help (where Tolle get's his inspiration)...maybe if we accept death and dying as a part of life, instead of running away and pretending that we are all immortal, we will be more at peace...I haven't mastered it...but maybe one day.
